Mikael jorgensen & greg o'keeffe
Greg O'Keeffe is one of my oldest friends and collaborators. We made a record called "Mikael Jorgensen & Greg O'Keeffe" that explores the world of synthesizers and technology in songs that are more rooted in CSN than you might think.
A good portion of these songs started out with a fairly traditional rock band instrumentation and after working on them for a while I realized that I was going through the motions of what I thought someone else would do and it was time to chuck that away and grant myself the permission to be as dense and intricate and experimental and weird as I can be.
Greg O’Keeffe has always been the supportive and often patient collaborator. Always down to try a weird ass idea, or at least humor me but all the while keeping that great 3 + beat that I can’t get enough of. You know the one, with the hi-hat placed where you wouldn’t expect it but now can’t live without it? Yeah, that one.
Then there’s this version of “ARMZ” that we recorded at The Bunker Studio that has more 60s California Folkie vibes than you might be expecting. This one was on the chopping block pretty quickly and got one of the more comprehensive overhauls.
Then there’s the albatross of a song, “BizDev” which started simply enough as an improv between Greg, Me and an EMS Synthi churning out 8th notes and bloomed into this running bamboo tree of a track. Every time I’d try and trim it back, it just grew longer and harder to prune. I’m happy with the final mix but go check out this early version that in some ways has more zuszh than the album version.
Anyway, we had a great time working on this record and it took a long time because I was touring quite a bit at this point.
